My Exclusive Conversation with Sanjay Khanduri on Chai With Ilachi

When I created my podcast Chai With Ilachi, my vision was to spotlight voices that go beyond clichés, conversations that dig deeper, and stories that show what really happens behind the glitter of Bollywood and Indian cinema.

That’s why sitting down with Sanjay Khanduri felt like a defining moment. He is not just a filmmaker—he is a rule-breaking storyteller who gave Hindi cinema one of its biggest cult classicsEk Chalis Ki Last Local. Known for mixing dark humor, edgy thrillers, and real-time narratives, Khanduri has carved his own lane in an industry often afraid to take risks.

In this episode of Chai With Ilachi, I explored his journey from Delhi to Bollywood, from being an electronics graduate and investigative journalist to working with Subhash Ghai on

Taal, and finally, to directing bold and fearless films that redefined independent Hindi cinema.

The Journey of Sanjay Khanduri: From Delhi to Bollywood

Before he became known as one of the most unconventional directors in Bollywood,

Sanjay Khanduri started his career as a correspondent with TV-18. But storytelling pulled him toward fiction, leading him to MTV and Crest Communications.

A turning point came when he joined Subhash Ghai’s team on Taal (1999), working alongside Aishwarya Rai, Akshaye Khanna, and Anil Kapoor. That early exposure to a big-budget Bollywood musical gave him the confidence to chase his own vision as a director.

Mentored by Kundan Shah, Sanjay was encouraged to write a high-concept, low-budget film that would stand out in Bollywood. The result was Ek Chalis Ki Last Local—a film that became a Bollywood cult hit despite its small release.

Creating Cult Cinema: Ek Chalis Ki Last Local and Beyond

Released with just 180 prints, Ek Chalis Ki Last Local ran for five weeks in theatres and later exploded on DVD, making it one of the most loved dark comedies in Indian cinema. It bagged four Stardust nominations, a Silver Palm Award for Excellence in Filmmaking, and today, streams on Disney+ Hotstar, cementing its place as a Bollywood cult classic.

Sanjay’s second film, Kismat Love Paisa Dilli, was a satirical one-night thriller. Though it faced release challenges, it earned him the Golden Palm Award at the Mexico International Film Festival and recognition for Best Original Screenplay.

Beyond films, he directed episodes of Gumrah and collaborated with Sudhir Mishra on Hostages (Disney+ Hotstar). Today, he is directing a real-time social thriller with Abundantia Entertainment and scripting a mega web series with KV Vijayendra Prasad, the legendary writer of Baahubali and RRR.

Why I Brought Sanjay Khanduri on Chai With Ilachi

On Chai With Ilachi, I bring in voices that stand out, voices that question the system, and voices that inspire. Sanjay Khanduri embodies all of these. He is rebellious, offbeat, and unafraid to stay original in a time when Bollywood often plays safe.

This episode is not just about his films—it’s about his struggles with Bollywood producers, his creative philosophy, and why he continues to be a maverick director in Indian cinema.
